Education and Conservation

Georgia Herbalists Guild – Ongoing group meets monthly in the Atlanta Metro area and offers education, networking, field trips and other activities throughout the year. A regional chapter of the American Herbalists Guild. Look for GHG information on the AHG website.

Georgia Native Plant Society – Active group meets monthly in the Atlanta Metro area. GNPS offers members educational lectures, an annual conference, newsletter and plant rescues.

Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center – A wildflower by any other name is a native medicinal, read between the lines for lots of good information. Check the national wildflower events calendar.

The National Center for the Preservation of Medicinal Herbs – Research and educational facility and botanical preserve in Meigs County, Ohio. Working to ensure the survival of wild native medicinals. NCPMH offers a newsletter, workshops and educational conferences, apprenticeships, technical support and more.

Plant Conservation Alliance’s Medicinal Plants Working Group – National group of botanists, herbalists, ecologists and others coordinating regional information about medicinal plant populations. A project of the Department of Natural Resources.

Tree Farm Communications – Cassette tapes of lectures from almost every herb conference in the United States. Archives of past conferences also available. Discounts for bulk orders. Excellent and inexpensive way to learn about cutting edge topics from some of the best herbal educators.

United Plant Savers – Group devoted to the preservation of native medicinals through ethical harvesting, propagation and cultivation, education and research. UPS has a botanical preserve in Ohio. Members receive their informative newsletter and discounts on educational events.

Wild Flowers of Appalachia – A good site for basic information and links to other sites.

Wildflower Center of Georgia – The home page of Perimeter College Botanical Gardens. They work closely with the Georgia Native Plant Society to maintain an impressive native plants garden and offer free lectures throughout the year.

Sources for Seeds and Plants

Horizon Herbs – This small, family run seed company is the place to look for almost any medicinal herb seed. Lots of rare, unusual and native seeds collected with respect for plant populations. Also books and other propagation information.

Johnny’s Selected Seeds – Many traditional and hard-to-find medicinal herb seeds plus a wide variety of culinary herb, flower and vegetable seeds. Many organic, heirloom and open-pollinated varieties.

Sources for Native Plants in Georgia

Southern Seed Legacy/Pass Along Southern Seeds – This project is dedicated to collecting and preserving southern heirloom seeds that have been planted in regional gardens for generations. Annual seed swap in the Athens, Georgia area.

Southern Exposure Seed Exchange – This small collectively run seed exchange offers many unusual seeds in limited quantities.

Information for Visitors to Rabun County, Georgia

Foxfire Center – Foxfire Center, located on the side of Black Rock Mountain in Mountain City, Georgia, is the site of most BotanoLogos programs and events. Dedicated to the preservation of Appalachian culture and traditions, Foxfire Center offers visitors a museum, self-guided tours, locally made crafts, and views of wild native plants along the trails.

Local Accommodations

Below are our recommendations for accommodations in Rabun County. We have personally visited these places and/or have had good reports from students who have stayed in them in the past. You can also check out the Rabun County Chamber of Commerce website.

Andy’s Trout Farm, Rabun Gap, Ga. 706-746-2550 – Yes, this is a trout farm, but they also have delightful cabins tucked along a creek. Great place for kids. It is about 10 miles from US 441, almost at the NC state line.

Beechwood Inn, Clayton, Ga. 706-782-5485 – Rated by Fodor’s as one of the best inns in the Southeast, this bed and breakfast is also a premier wine country inn. Gayle and David Darugh are your hosts.

Black Rock Mountain State Park 800-864-7275 – Located just up the road from the Foxfire Center where most of our programs are held, Black Rock offers a campground (with heated showers), backcountry campsites and cabins. Book early as this is a popular park. Due to the high elevation of the park, we don’t recommend staying here in the early spring (before April) due to frequent problems with ice on the road.

Cottontail Cottages, Mountain City, Ga. 706-782-0223 – Two very private, comfortable cabins for rent. One located in Mountain City.

Holiday Inn Express, Dillard, Ga. 706-746-3585 – Moderately priced motel with clean, well-maintained rooms, complimentary breakfast and a helpful staff. Quiet and convenient to US 441.

Mountain Aire Cottages 888-571-9597 – This 40s era cluster of cozy cabins is located just north of Clayton on Old 441, with friendly owners on site and cabins of various sizes.

Seed Lake Campground, Lakemont, Ga. 706-754-4014 – Seasonal wilderness camping on a beautiful lake with a beach. Often available during the busy season because not many people know it exists.

Sylvan Falls Mill Bed and Breakfast, Rabun Gap, Ga.
706-746-7138 – Historic house with a working gristmill owned by our friends, Linda and Mike Johnson. Guests can look forward to a warm welcome and an amazing breakfast prepared with cornmeal and whole wheat flour ground at the onsite mill.
